Devprayag is where geography meets mythology. The milky-white Alaknanda meets the emerald-green Bhagirathi, and from this union, the Ganga is born. The distinct colors of the two rivers remain visible for some distance before merging completely.

The Legend

According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance to bring the celestial Ganga to Earth to purify the souls of his ancestors. After pleasing Lord Shiva, Ganga descended to Earth and split into many streams at Devprayag.
